Copper Mine Costs and Fundamental Support for Prices
June 2009

The copper industry is experiencing a rapid period of change reflecting the credit crunch and ensuing global economic downturn. At mid-year 2008, prior to the Lehman Brothers collapse, there were around fifty mines in construction that cumulatively could have supplied around 2Mt of new capacity by 2011, approximately 11% of forecast mine supply that year.
At this stage one of the critical questions being asked by clients related to the sustainability of elevated capital cost levels, and how this was influencing the buy or build decision making process amongst producers.
