High Calcium Limestone

Over recent years, the utility industry has added over 50 Flue Gas Desulfurization units (scrubbers) in an effort to reduce sulfur stack emissions and comply with the Clear Air Act. As we head toward 2010, the industry's access to credit allowances will be halved and the need for even cleaner emissions will heighten.

The leading technology for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) is wet Limestone Forced Oxidation which requires the use of a High Calcium Limestone (HCL). Monitoring the demand for HCL allows the industry to evaluate trends in production, price and resulting scrubber economics.

This study answers the questions surrounding availability of HCL and provides insight into future demand, transportation and ultimately price trends in the Eastern US market.

By providing a market outlook, this study will be of interest to utilities, limestone suppliers, logistics companies and regulators operating in the Eastern US.

Benefits

Key benefits of the study include:

  • Independent Market Insight
A credible and independent assessment of the future supply and demand dynamics for HCL is a necessity when investing in limestone scrubbers.
  • Rigorous Supply and Demand Analysis
Our detailed supply analysis looks at all major HCL producers and their production techniques. On the demand side, we analyse current demand, demand from announced new FGD and additional demand required by CAIR for new FGD - all by plant, state and region.
  • Logistical Understanding
The transportation and logistics around getting the HCL to market are complex. This study clarifies the key inter-state logistical capability, constraints and considerations.
  • Analysis of Key Factors Influencing Future Price
When demand outweighs supply, it is crucial to understand how high prices may rise, as this clearly impacts the economics of installing limestone scrubbers.
